But the halal place offers 3 sauce choices - the last of which is haram ?
The haram is the hot sauce so of course that’s what I will get when I go there ( note - I am not Muslim, just love Middle Eastern food).
I guess I’m curious as to whether it’s really haram or that’s marketing ( I’ve eaten a lot of middle eastern hot sauce that was delicious)

probably word play, as in “it’s so hot it’s haraam!”
the best part about the city I work in is there’s no shortage of these restaurants. and most are damn good.

That is my interpretation, too, but it seems like an odd way of selling it - and who knows if I’m right or not.
These types of places aren’t exactly everywhere around Chicago, but there’s a decent number of them - and yeah, they’re mostly damn good or better.

We just spell words like kabob, shawarma, and aluminum like we pronounce them so I’m pretty sure that makes it right

How very odd. You see other spellings in other languages but I've never seen anything other than kebab in English.

eh, I’d look at it the same way we have boutique hot sauces with all kinds of amusing names.
unfortunately the only times I’ve been to Chicago we were in South Deering and not a whole lot of time (or inclination) to skulk around there looking for a place to eat.

if words were spelled like you pronounce them
why would anyone need to study english?

There’s at least one joint worth checking out in South Deering.

I’ll check it out next time I have the “privilege” of going there.

Come to the US! We seem to spell a lot of words differently from the UK or Canada.

Yeah I didn’t think there was much there other than Lake Calumet and a lot of industrial land (much of it abandoned).

Usually anything vegetarian is halal as long as there’s no alcohol in it. Unless they’re putting like pork drippings in the hot sauce or something I think it’s maybe a not-as-funny -as-they-think pun.

I can’t imagine they would use pork, or gelatin, or alcohol in the hot sauce - none of those things are a necessary ingredient. I think it’s just an odd seeming play on words.
At any rate, I’ll be eating there some time this week, and will probably ask them.

I have never once seen it spelled "shoarma", ever. I've spent three years in the middle east and am currently in the middle east now.

sounds like the middle east is spelling it wrong too
